Gary Jacobsen

(December 16, 1952—October 9, 1994)

Gary’s on the River is named in honor of Gary Jacobsen, the middle brother of Ron and David Jacobsen, who died of AIDS-related complications in 1994. A man of enormous creative talent and artistic genius, his life was cut short at the young age of 41.

Anyone who had the privilege to know Gary was drawn to his incredible spirit—a spirit that is impossible to forget or replace, but that lives on in the lives of those who loved him. He had the eyes of a child and a spirit of wonder and magic. Often referred to as “Mr. Christmas” by close friends and family, he had an infectious zest for life and loved to surprise and be surprised.

Despite his unbelievable talent, he always remained modest. He loved all children, and especially his four nieces and nephews, and had a special way of treating kids like they were his equal. His gentle and unassuming nature was an inspiration.

A professional illustrator in Seattle, Washington for many years, he began his career designing posters for the theater arts community. Jacobsen won many awards for his illustrations over the years and was featured for several years running in Seattle-based award shows. While he worked with various mediums, he was most adept in the mediums of pastel and scratchboard.

Gary spent his childhood in Spencer and graduated from Spencer High School in 1971; he later graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in Graphic Design in 1976.

In the year before Gary passed away, he got chance to tour the church his brothers had then just recently purchased. Upon entering, he was immediately enamored; his eyes lit up as he declared it a “gem” of a property.

There is no doubt he is watching down on the church’s journey and is thrilled to have it honor his legacy.
